This
masterpiece was painted by Delacroix when he was twenty-four years
old. This was his first work accepted by the Paris Salon and
culminated six years in the Ecole des Beaux-Artes. He had been
orphaned at the age of sixteen but after this work, Delacroix went from
one success to anther. He traveled to England and North Africa and in
the latter became fascinated by the Moorish people and their lives.
His many depictions of the people of North Africa extended his fame and
he became a member of the Academy before his death in 1863.
