Pollice Verso (classic male art print)
This is a reproduction of Jean-Leon Geromes "Pollice Verso" of 1872. The artist was born in 1824 and, by the time of his death at the age of eighty years, was a respected master in the French artistic community. The title translates as "turned thumb" and this painting is the source of the popular impression of the "thumbs up or down" ritual of the ancient Roman arena. The original is in the Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, Arizona.
